About Chai:

Neal Chaim Tobar-Dupres was born in Eugene, OR, and currently resides in Portland, OR, harvesting wild edible plants and mushrooms as a lifestyle, and for a living. He began his journey into the field of foraging at a young age, pursuing his passion not only as a cultural tradition, passed on from his maternal side of the family, (who are all enrolled members of the Cowlitz Tribe) but also as a career that has supported his security since he began providing to Portland businesses over a decade ago. His roots reach back deep into the Pacific Northwest and his knowledge of the local flora reflects that certainty comprehensively. In his formative years he attended the Environmental Middle School in Portland, at which there was generally a great focus within the curriculum on the study of native plants and the environment. By the time he was in high school, he could easily identify over 80 species of native plants, and he furthered his knowledge on his own accord by seeking out all relevant and available literature, while simultaneously going into the field to learn with a hands on approach. At age 18 he began working for Friends of Trees, a local non-profit devoted to preserving and growing the urban canopy of Portland. After working for over a year at Friends of Trees, he began to work in the habitat restoration industry, for Sound Native Plants, a restoration firm based out of Olympia, WA. While at this job, he learned a vast amount pertaining to local ecosystems, giving much due credit to his superiors for providing him with an extensive arrangement of knowledge, all the while realizing there was niche market for edible plants in the local restaurant industry.

By the age of 20, he started to pursue a career in that specific field, which consequently blossomed as Portland’s food scene grew immensely. Currently, this is his practice year round, selling almost exclusively through Cascade Organic, a local distributor, with which he has established a substantial and well founded relationship. At the age of 30, he has come to the realization that he is passionate about sharing knowledge of his expertise, accordingly deciding to pivot his career towards the realm of education. Thus, he has decided to start teaching classes at Trout Creek Wilderness Lodge.
